The American Shorthair descends from European cats brought to North America on early colonial ships, kept as working barn cats. Selectively bred since the early 1900s into a breed of its own, the American Shorthair is famously healthy, easy and an excellent family cat.
Temperament
Easy-going, friendly, adaptable, independent. American Shorthairs bond with the family without being clingy and adapt well to changes.
Exercise needs
Moderate. Two play sessions daily.
Grooming
Short dense coat. Weekly brushing.
Common health issues
Generally one of the healthiest pedigree cat breeds. Watch for: HCM, hip dysplasia, obesity.
