Boston Terrier
Cheerful "American Gentleman" in a tuxedo. Compact, friendly and surprisingly trainable.
Created in late 19th-century Boston by crossing English Bulldogs and white English Terriers, the Boston Terrier was the first breed entirely developed in the United States. Affectionate, lively and famously dressed in their tuxedo markings, Bostons are great urban companions with milder brachycephalic features than Pugs or Frenchies.
Temperament
Lively, affectionate, intelligent, gentle. Bostons are eager to please (easier to train than most flat-faced breeds) and excellent with children. Generally friendly with strangers and other dogs.
Exercise needs
45β60 minutes of moderate daily exercise. Avoid heat, but Bostons handle heat better than Frenchies or Pugs.
Grooming
Short coat, weekly brushing, occasional bath. Wipe facial folds (less prominent than Frenchies/Pugs) weekly.
Common health issues
Mild BOAS in some lines. Eye conditions (corneal ulcers β eyes are prominent). Patellar luxation. Allergies. Generally healthier and longer-lived than other brachycephalic breeds.
π Best for
Apartment dwellers, families with children, first-time owners, urban couples.
π Not best for
