Cocker Spaniel
Cheerful sporting spaniel. Beautiful coat, sweet temperament, real exercise needs.
The Cocker Spaniel descends from the spaniels brought to England by the Spanish โ bred to flush and retrieve game birds, particularly woodcock (hence "cocker"). The English Cocker is a working gun dog at heart, even when kept as a pet โ they thrive on exercise, scent work and inclusion in family life.
Temperament
Cheerful, gentle, eager-to-please, devoted. Cockers can be sensitive โ harsh training shuts them down. They're very people-oriented and dislike being alone. "Rage syndrome" was historically a problem in some lines (especially solid red); modern responsible breeding has largely eliminated it.
Exercise needs
60โ90 minutes of daily exercise plus mental work. Scent work is ideal. Off-lead in safe areas โ Cockers love to retrieve.
Grooming
Medium-long coat with heavy ear and leg feathering. Brush 3ร weekly; ears need cleaning weekly (long, hairy ears = infection risk). Most pet owners get a "puppy clip" every 6โ8 weeks.
Common health issues
Ear infections (very common). Eye conditions (cataracts, glaucoma, PRA). Hip dysplasia. Autoimmune haemolytic anaemia in some lines. Generally a robust breed otherwise.
๐ Best for
Active families with children, multi-pet homes, country / suburban owners.
๐ Not best for
Households that leave dogs alone all day. Owners unwilling to manage ears.
