Dachshund
Bold, comical and full of personality. Long backs need careful protection.
Bred in 16th-century Germany to hunt badgers ("Dachs" = badger, "Hund" = dog), the Dachshund's long body and short legs were purpose-designed for going to ground in tunnels. Today they're lovable, comical companions with terrier-like determination. The famous long back makes them prone to spinal disease β protecting it is the #1 health priority.
Temperament
Bold, curious, vocal, sometimes stubborn. Dachshunds bond intensely with their family and are wary of strangers. Known for being persistent barkers and natural diggers (it's in the bones).
Exercise needs
40β60 minutes of flat walking daily. Avoid stairs, jumping on/off furniture, and long walks before 12 months β all increase IVDD risk. Use ramps; carry up stairs.
Grooming
Three coat varieties: smooth (weekly brush), long-haired (3Γ weekly), and wire-haired (weekly + occasional hand-stripping). All shed moderately.
Common health issues
Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) β affects roughly 1 in 4 Dachshunds. Insurance covers this on most policies but premiums are higher. Obesity worsens IVDD risk dramatically. Also: dental crowding, eye conditions.
π Best for
Apartment dwellers, families with older children, secure-garden homes.
π Not best for
Homes with lots of stairs and no time to carry the dog. Owners who indulge weight gain.
