The Whippet was developed in 19th-century industrial England as a "poor man's racehorse" by mill workers in northern England. Smaller and lighter than a Greyhound but built for the same lightning sprint, the Whippet is one of the most affectionate and adaptable hound breeds.

Temperament

Gentle, sweet, sensitive, quiet. Whippets are velcro-dogs with their family, calm with strangers and tolerant of children. High prey drive towards small animals.

Exercise needs

60 minutes of daily exercise β€” two short walks plus a sprint.

Grooming

Short fine coat, weekly brush. They feel cold β€” most need a coat in winter.

Common health issues

Generally a healthy breed. Watch for: hereditary deafness, eye conditions, anaesthesia sensitivity, dental disease. Lifespan often 14+.

πŸ‘ Best for

Apartment-friendly families, owners home a lot, allergy-tolerant.

πŸ‘Ž Not best for

Homes with cats or rabbits (prey drive).
