Dog Crate Size Calculator

Find the perfect crate size from your dog's length and height.

A dog crate that's too small is uncomfortable and stressful; too large and it loses its den-like sense of safety (and house-training value for puppies). The right size lets your dog stand up, turn around and lie down comfortably — with about 4–6 inches of headroom and tail-room. This calculator turns two simple measurements into the exact crate dimensions and the matching commercial size category.

How this calculator works

The standard formula adds 10 cm (4 inches) to length and height for comfort. For house-training a puppy, we recommend a smaller crate (just enough to stand and turn) to discourage soiling — but with a divider you can use a full-size crate and shrink the usable space until they grow into it.

Width is about 70% of length — narrower than people expect, because dogs naturally curl up.

Common commercial sizes (US): 24" (XS), 30" (S), 36" (M), 42" (L), 48" (XL), 54" (XXL).

Frequently asked questions

My puppy will get bigger — should I buy a big crate now?

Buy the adult-size crate with a built-in divider panel. Most quality crates ship with one. Block off the back portion until the puppy grows into the full space.

Is a crate cruel?

Used correctly, no — crates mimic a den and are safe spaces. Used as punishment or for too long, they're harmful. Adult dogs should not be crated more than 4–6 hours during the day.

Wire, plastic or fabric crate?

Wire: best ventilation, foldable, good for home. Plastic (Vari Kennel): airline-approved, more secure, less ventilation. Fabric: lightest for travel but easily destroyed by chewers.

How long can I crate my dog?

Adult dogs: max 6 hours daytime, longer at night. Puppies: 1 hour per month of age (3-month-old = max 3 hours awake). Always exercise before and after.
