Greyhound
45 mph couch potato. Surprisingly low-energy at home — sprinters, not marathoners.
The Greyhound is one of the oldest dog breeds, depicted in ancient Egyptian art over 4,000 years ago. They're the fastest dog breed (up to 72 km/h) and the only dog breed mentioned in the King James Bible. Despite the speed, retired racing Greyhounds are famously "45 mph couch potatoes" — calm, gentle and brilliant family pets.
Temperament
Gentle, dignified, sensitive, quiet. Greyhounds are remarkably calm indoors and tolerant of other dogs. They have high prey drive — small fluffy pets are at risk.
Exercise needs
30–45 minutes of daily exercise — two short walks plus a sprint in a secure area is ideal. They're sprinters, not marathoners.
Grooming
Short coat, weekly brush. Bathing as needed.
Common health issues
Bloat / GDV. Bone cancer (osteosarcoma). Sensitive to anaesthesia (always use a Greyhound-experienced vet). Thin skin (cuts easily). Dental disease.
👍 Best for
Apartment-friendly retiree owners, calm families, allergy-tolerant owners.
👎 Not best for
Homes with cats, rabbits or guinea pigs (prey drive). Owners wanting a sport partner.
