The Rhodesian Ridgeback was developed by Boer settlers in southern Africa in the late 1800s, crossing European hunting dogs with the indigenous ridge-backed Khoikhoi dog. Used in packs to bay (not kill) lions while hunters arrived, today's Ridgeback is a powerful, dignified family companion.

Temperament

Loyal, dignified, athletic, sometimes aloof. Excellent with their family and older children. High prey drive.

Exercise needs

60โ€“90 minutes of daily exercise plus mental work.

Grooming

Short coat, weekly brush.

Common health issues

Hip and elbow dysplasia. Dermoid sinus (a Ridgeback-specific congenital defect โ€” should be screened in puppies). Bloat / GDV. Hypothyroidism.
