The Havanese is the national dog of Cuba, descended from the Spanish Bichon family brought by colonists in the 1500s. Today's Havanese is one of the best small companion dogs β€” affectionate, intelligent, low-shedding and brilliant with both children and other pets.

Temperament

Affectionate, friendly, gentle, playful. Havanese thrive on family company and don't do well left alone for long.

Exercise needs

30–60 minutes of daily walking plus indoor play. Mental work is just as important as physical.

Grooming

Long silky double coat. Daily brushing if kept long; most owners do a "puppy clip" every 6 weeks. Low-shedding.

Common health issues

Patellar luxation. Eye conditions (cataracts, cherry eye, PRA). Hip dysplasia. Heart murmurs. Generally a long-lived breed.

πŸ‘ Best for

Allergy-sensitive families, retirees, apartment dwellers, multi-pet homes.

πŸ‘Ž Not best for

Owners away from home all day. Athletic owners wanting a sport partner.
