Rhodesian Ridgeback
"African Lion Hound" with a famous ridge of hair on the back. Powerful, independent, devoted.
The Rhodesian Ridgeback was developed by Boer settlers in southern Africa in the late 1800s, crossing European hunting dogs with the indigenous ridge-backed Khoikhoi dog. Used in packs to bay (not kill) lions while hunters arrived, today's Ridgeback is a powerful, dignified family companion.
Temperament
Loyal, dignified, athletic, sometimes aloof. Excellent with their family and older children. High prey drive.
Exercise needs
60β90 minutes of daily exercise plus mental work.
Grooming
Short coat, weekly brush.
Common health issues
Hip and elbow dysplasia. Dermoid sinus (a Ridgeback-specific congenital defect β should be screened in puppies). Bloat / GDV. Hypothyroidism.
