The calculator combines breed-size statistics from large veterinary databases with the well-known finding that first-litter dams typically have 1–2 fewer offspring than experienced dams of the same breed.

How accurate is this for individual dogs?
It's a population average. Individual litters vary widely — only an X-ray after day 45 gives a precise count.
When should we X-ray?
Day 45–55 of pregnancy. Earlier than 45 days the foetal skeletons aren't mineralised enough to count.
