A dog's gestation is around 63 days from ovulation; a cat's is around 65 days from mating. This tracker calculates the expected due date, current week of pregnancy and the key prenatal milestones — first heartbeat, palpable foetuses, weight changes and pre-whelping nest building.

How this calculator works

The tracker counts forward from the mating date using species-specific gestation length. It then matches the current day to a stage: implantation, organogenesis, foetal growth, late gestation and pre-whelping.

For accurate scheduling of confirmation ultrasound (around day 25) and prenatal X-ray (after day 45), use the calculated dates as a starting point.

Frequently asked questions

When can I confirm pregnancy?

Ultrasound from day 25 onwards. Palpation by an experienced vet is possible from day 21–28 but less reliable than ultrasound.

When should I prepare the whelping box?

About 1 week before due date. Move the mum into the box and let her settle so she sees it as her safe space.

What's a sign labour is starting?

A drop in body temperature to below 37.2°C (rectal) usually predicts whelping within 24 hours. Restlessness, nesting and refusal to eat are also strong signs.
