Temperament

Aloof, dignified, loyal to one or two people. Chows are notoriously reserved with strangers and can be aggressive without serious early socialisation. Not naturally good with other dogs.

Exercise

30–45 minutes of moderate daily exercise. Heat-sensitive (heavy coat).

Grooming

Very heavy double coat β€” daily brushing. Two huge annual moults.

Health

Hip / elbow dysplasia. Entropion (eye lid rolls in). Heat stroke. Bloat / GDV. Lifespan 8–12 years (short for a medium dog).

Temperament

Friendly, cheerful, sociable, vocal. Sammies are great with children, other dogs and most pets.

Exercise

90 minutes of daily exercise. They love cold weather and pull-sports.

Grooming

Heavy double coat β€” brush 3–4Γ— weekly, daily during the spectacular seasonal moults. Bathe every 8–10 weeks.

Health

Hereditary glomerulopathy (kidney β€” DNA test). Hip dysplasia. Diabetes. Eye conditions. Heart disease.
