The Samoyed was bred by the Samoyedic peoples of Siberia for thousands of years to hunt, herd reindeer, pull sleds and sleep beside their humans for warmth. Today's Samoyed is a strikingly beautiful, friendly, sociable family dog β€” and one of the most demanding coat-care commitments in dogdom.

Temperament

Friendly, cheerful, sociable, vocal. Sammies are great with children, other dogs and most pets.

Exercise needs

90 minutes of daily exercise. They love cold weather and pull-sports.

Grooming

Heavy double coat β€” brush 3–4Γ— weekly, daily during the spectacular seasonal moults. Bathe every 8–10 weeks.

Common health issues

Hereditary glomerulopathy (kidney β€” DNA test). Hip dysplasia. Diabetes. Eye conditions. Heart disease.
