The Chow Chow is one of the oldest dog breeds in the world โ€” DNA evidence suggests origins in China over 2,000 years ago. They're famously independent, dignified and almost cat-like. Their distinctive blue-black tongue and lion-mane coat are unmistakable.

Temperament

Aloof, dignified, loyal to one or two people. Chows are notoriously reserved with strangers and can be aggressive without serious early socialisation. Not naturally good with other dogs.

Exercise needs

30โ€“45 minutes of moderate daily exercise. Heat-sensitive (heavy coat).

Grooming

Very heavy double coat โ€” daily brushing. Two huge annual moults.

Common health issues

Hip / elbow dysplasia. Entropion (eye lid rolls in). Heat stroke. Bloat / GDV. Lifespan 8โ€“12 years (short for a medium dog).

๐Ÿ‘ Best for

Experienced single-dog owners, calm households, secure yards.

๐Ÿ‘Ž Not best for

First-time owners, multi-pet homes, hot climates.
