Chow Chow
Lion-maned ancient Chinese guardian. Independent, dignified, often aloof.
The Chow Chow is one of the oldest dog breeds in the world β DNA evidence suggests origins in China over 2,000 years ago. They're famously independent, dignified and almost cat-like. Their distinctive blue-black tongue and lion-mane coat are unmistakable.
Temperament
Aloof, dignified, loyal to one or two people. Chows are notoriously reserved with strangers and can be aggressive without serious early socialisation. Not naturally good with other dogs.
Exercise needs
30β45 minutes of moderate daily exercise. Heat-sensitive (heavy coat).
Grooming
Very heavy double coat β daily brushing. Two huge annual moults.
Common health issues
Hip / elbow dysplasia. Entropion (eye lid rolls in). Heat stroke. Bloat / GDV. Lifespan 8β12 years (short for a medium dog).
