Pekingese
Ancient Chinese imperial lap dog. Dignified, independent, brachycephalic.
The Pekingese was bred for over 1,000 years as the sacred lapdog of Chinese emperors β only the imperial family was allowed to own them, and theft was punishable by death. Today the Peke is a dignified, independent, low-energy companion with significant brachycephalic concerns.
Temperament
Dignified, independent, sometimes aloof. Devoted to their chosen person.
Exercise needs
Just 20β30 minutes of light walking daily. Cannot tolerate heat.
Grooming
Long heavy double coat. Daily brushing. Many owners do a shorter "puppy cut" every 6 weeks.
Common health issues
BOAS (severe). Eye injuries (eyes are very prominent). Heart disease. Spinal issues. Heat stroke.
