Pet Water Intake Calculator
Find out how much water your dog or cat needs each day.
Water is your pet's most important nutrient. Too little can cause dehydration, kidney stress or worse β but how much is enough? This calculator gives a research-backed daily water target for dogs and cats based on body weight, food type (dry vs wet), activity level and ambient temperature.
How this calculator works
Healthy adult dogs need roughly 50β60 ml of water per kg of body weight per day; cats need a little less, around 40β60 ml/kg, and they get a large share of that from food. The calculator starts from these baselines and adjusts for:
- Food type β dry-fed pets need more bowl water (wet food is 70β80% water).
- Activity β working or sport dogs lose water through panting.
- Weather β hot/humid days can double water loss.
If your pet drinks much more or much less than this target, see a vet β sudden changes can signal diabetes, kidney issues or infection.
Frequently asked questions
My cat barely drinks β is that normal?
Cats evolved as desert hunters and get most of their water from prey. If you feed wet food, low bowl-drinking is normal. If your cat eats dry food and drinks little, encourage drinking with a fountain or by adding water to meals.
Can I use tap water?
Yes β clean tap water is fine for most dogs and cats. Avoid distilled water long-term (no minerals) and steer clear of standing puddles or pond water on walks.
What does excessive thirst mean?
Drinking more than ~100 ml/kg/day on a regular basis (polydipsia) can be an early sign of diabetes, kidney disease, Cushing's or infections. Track it for a few days and see your vet.
How can I get my dog to drink more in summer?
Add ice cubes to the bowl, place several bowls around the house, use a pet fountain, or top wet food with extra water. Always carry water on walks.
