Daily Exercise Needs Calculator

Daily exercise minutes by breed energy, age and weight.

How much daily exercise does your dog actually need? A Border Collie has 3Γ— the requirements of a Bulldog. Under-exercising leads to behavioural issues, weight gain and joint problems; over-exercising a puppy can damage growth plates. This calculator gives a target in minutes per day based on breed energy level, age and weight.

How this calculator works

Adult dogs typically need 30–120 minutes of activity per day. The calculator scales by breed energy and applies the puppy 5-minute rule: a young puppy gets 5 minutes of structured exercise per month of age, twice a day, until growth plates close (around 12–18 months).

Frequently asked questions

Does mental exercise count?

Yes β€” sniffing, training games and puzzle feeders are mentally tiring. 15 minutes of nose-work can wear a dog out as much as a 30-minute walk.

My senior dog can't walk far β€” what should I do?

Trade duration for frequency: several short, gentle walks instead of one long one. Hydrotherapy is excellent for older or arthritic dogs.

Can a dog get too much exercise?

Yes, especially puppies and brachycephalic breeds. Watch for limping, excessive panting or reluctance the next day.
