Score your pet's body condition on the standard 9-point scale.
Body Condition Score (BCS) is the gold standard vets use to assess weight — it's far more accurate than the scale alone, because it accounts for muscle and frame. This calculator walks you through the standard 9-point WSAVA body condition assessment in four short questions.
How this calculator works
The 9-point BCS is the system most veterinary teaching hospitals use. Scores 1–3 are underweight, 4–5 ideal, 6–9 overweight to obese. Each step above ideal corresponds to roughly 10–15% over ideal weight. The calculator combines your answers about ribs, waist and belly profile into an overall score.
Frequently asked questions
Is BCS more accurate than weight alone?
Yes — a Greyhound at "low end of breed standard" weight may look ribby on the scale but score a perfect 5. BCS ignores frame and looks at fat cover directly.
How fast should an overweight pet lose weight?
Safely: 1–2% of body weight per week for dogs, slightly slower for cats (rapid weight loss in cats can cause hepatic lipidosis).
My senior pet keeps losing weight — is that good?
Not always. Unintended weight loss in seniors can mean dental issues, cancer, kidney disease or diabetes. See a vet.
