๐Ÿงฅ Coats + clothing

Dog coats โ€” which dogs in Ireland actually need them

Most double-coated dogs (Husky, Lab, Collie, Golden) are fine in Irish winters without a coat. Thin-coated, small, very young, very old, brachycephalic and recently-shaved dogs DO benefit from one โ€” especially in driving rain. Here's how to know which camp your dog is in, and how to size a coat that won't rub or restrict.

What we'll be stocking

Types of coat โ€” what each one is for

Rain coat (lightweight, waterproof)

Level
Most useful in IE
Size
Back-length specific
Habitat
Waterproof + breathable shell

For wet walks at any temperature. Picks: Hurtta Mudventure, Equafleece Tankie. Don't need to be insulated โ€” keeping the body dry is the win, since wet fur loses 90% of its insulating value.

Fleece (warm, no rain protection)

Level
Cold dry days
Size
Snug, not tight
Habitat
Polyester fleece

For cold dry days, indoor extra warmth (older dogs), or as a layer under a waterproof. Picks: Equafleece, Ruffwear Climate Changer. Wash easily; great for dogs that hate harnesses + collars on bare skin.

Padded winter jacket

Level
Sub-zero / thin coats
Size
Snug + adjustable
Habitat
Waterproof + insulated

For Greyhounds, Whippets, Frenchies, small dogs and seniors in actual cold (-2 ยฐC and below). Look for chest + belly coverage. Brands: Hurtta Extreme Warmer, Ruffwear Powder Hound. Don't over-bundle a healthy double-coat โ€” they overheat fast.

Cooling vest

Level
Hot summer walks
Size
Snug fit, no sagging
Habitat
Wet โ†’ evaporative cooling

For brachycephalic dogs and double-coated breeds in summer. Soak in cold water, wring out, fit. Lasts 1โ€“2 hours. Picks: Ruffwear Swamp Cooler, Aqua Coolkeeper. Not a substitute for walking at cool times โ€” see our Walk Safety Forecaster.

Hi-vis / safety vest

Level
Dark walks
Size
Over coat or fur
Habitat
Reflective + LED options

Irish winter mornings/evenings are dark. A reflective vest or LED collar makes your dog visible to drivers. Cyclist hi-vis often fits medium dogs. โ‚ฌ10โ€“โ‚ฌ25 buys serious safety.

How to size + when your dog needs (and doesn't need) a coat

๐Ÿ“

Measure 3 things โ€” back, neck, chest

Back length: base of neck (where the collar sits) to the base of the tail. Neck: around the widest part of the neck. Chest: behind the front legs, around the deepest part. Then check the brand's sizing chart โ€” UK/IE brands fit differently from US ones.

๐Ÿถ

Coat needed: thin coats, brachy, small, senior

Greyhounds, Whippets, Italian Greyhounds, Lurchers, Chihuahuas, Frenchies, small terriers, dogs over 10, dogs under 4 months, dogs recently shaved or recovering from surgery. These do benefit from coats below 10 ยฐC and in driving rain.

โ„๏ธ

Coat NOT usually needed: double coats

Labradors, Goldens, Border Collies, Huskies, Malamutes, Bernese, Newfoundlands. Their double coat is purpose-built for Irish winters. A waterproof rain shell is fine; insulated jackets cause overheating + mat the coat.

๐Ÿšท

Avoid: tight, bulky, restrictive, around the neck

Coats should let the dog walk normally, sit, lie down, stretch, scratch. Watch for rubbing under the front legs. Never use a sweater that goes over the head if your dog hates that โ€” it builds fear of clothing.

๐Ÿงผ

Wash regularly + check daily

Wet coats grow bacteria fast. Hang to dry between uses; wash weekly in winter. Daily check: lift the coat off and look for chafing under the front legs and around the chest strap.

๐Ÿ“ฆ We're stocking up

Our dog clothing & coats range goes live as we vet suppliers โ€” we won't list anything we wouldn't use ourselves. In the meantime, our calculators, breed guides and AI vet tools below are free and don't need stock.

Frequently asked questions

My Lab shivers when she's wet โ€” does she need a coat?

Yes. Even double-coated breeds shiver when soaking wet because the coat's insulating air pockets collapse. A breathable rain coat keeps the undercoat dry and stops the shiver. Skip the insulated jacket โ€” overkill.

Are dog boots worth it in Ireland?

Useful situations: salt/grit on pavements (winter), hot tarmac (summer โ€” see Walk Safety Forecaster), recovering from a paw injury, hiking on sharp rocky ground. Most healthy dogs walking on grass + paths don't need them daily.

My dog refuses to wear a coat โ€” what do I do?

Build in stages: lay the coat on the floor, treat. Drape over their back, treat. Quick fasten + treat + immediate removal. Build to leaving on for 1 minute, then 5, then a walk. Never force a clothing-averse dog into a head-over-the-collar style โ€” choose a step-in coat with a Velcro back.

When are jumpers / clothes harmful?

Indoors when the house is warm (overheating). On a healthy double-coated dog (mats the undercoat). Anything tight that restricts breathing or movement. Costumes left on for hours. Anything with small parts a dog can swallow.
