๐ฉบ Bird health + grooming
Birds are stoics โ they hide illness until very late, because in the wild a sick bird is dinner. Daily observation + a working health kit + a vet who actually sees birds (most don't) is the difference between a 12-year budgie and a 4-year tragedy. Here's the essentials.
Hard calcium source. Birds nibble for calcium + beak conditioning. Essential for laying females + growing chicks. Replace when more than half-eroded. Cuttlebone (real fish bone) is best; mineral blocks are an alternative.
Anti-Mite spray (Avipro, Johnson's) for red mite, scaly leg + face mite. Treat the bird PLUS deep-clean the cage at the same time. Severe infestations need vet-prescribed ivermectin. Most pet shops also sell ineffective "mite blocks" โ skip those.
Small bird nail scissors. Trim every 4โ8 weeks if cement perch + cuttlebone aren't keeping growth in check. Avoid cutting the "quick" โ pink interior of the nail. Beak overgrowth (asymmetric beak, soft beak) = vet, NEVER home-trim.
F10 SC, Avian Defender โ kills bacteria, fungi, viruses. Use to clean cage monthly + quarantine new birds. NEVER bleach (residue toxic), NEVER common household disinfectants (phenols deadly to birds). F10 is the single gold-standard.
Avipro Plus probiotic โ for stress, illness recovery, after antibiotics. Calcivet for calcium drinks during egg-laying. Most well-fed birds on pellets + variety don't need daily supplements; sick birds + breeders do.
Bright eyes, smooth feathers, normal posture, eating + drinking, droppings normal. Sick bird signs: fluffed feathers all day, sleeping more, droppings change, vomit, wheeze, tail bob with each breath. ANY of these = vet within 24h. Birds collapse fast.
A โฌ15 kitchen scale + a perch on top. Weigh every Sunday morning. Birds hide illness โ but they can't hide weight loss. 5โ10% drop = vet. Healthy budgie ~30โ40 g, cockatiel ~80โ100 g, grey ~400โ500 g. Track in a notebook or app.
Most "small animal" vets see one bird a year. Avian-trained vets are rare in Ireland โ names like UCD, Bairbre O'Malley (Bray), Pet Vet Hospital (Dublin), Cliffs Vet (Cork). Have the contact + 24h emergency line saved. Bird emergencies progress in HOURS not days.
Shallow ceramic dish OR fine spray bottle of room-temp water 2โ3ร weekly. Skin moisture, mite control, feather condition. Some birds resist; spray gently from above (mimics rain). Bird should preen for 30+ min after = success.
Birds have hyper-efficient lungs โ fumes that don't bother you kill them. Strict NO list: Teflon/PTFE-coated cookware (overheats โ fatal in minutes), aerosol sprays, candles, vape, smoke, plug-in air fresheners, oven self-clean cycles. Move bird to another house if Teflon used.
Some keepers trim flight feathers to prevent escape; others say it removes a core need. If you trim, do BOTH wings symmetrically (one-side trim = unbalanced crash) + only the outer 4โ6 primary feathers (NOT all of them). Better solution: secure all windows + doors before letting bird out.
Our health & grooming range goes live as we vet suppliers โ we won't list anything we wouldn't use ourselves. In the meantime, our calculators, breed guides and AI vet tools below are free and don't need stock.
Search by name: avian-experienced vets in Ireland include UCD Veterinary Hospital, Bairbre O'Malley Veterinary Hospital (Bray), Pet Vet Hospital Glasnevin, Cliffs Veterinary Group (Cork). Phone before you book โ confirm "do you treat budgies / cockatiels / parrots?". Most "small animal" practices see one bird a year and aren't equipped for serious cases.
Same-day vet for: fluffed feathers all day, droppings change, blood, vomit, wheeze, tail bob with each breath, refusing food, drooping wing, foot held up, lameness, "off-balance" perching. Birds hide illness until critical โ by the time they show, they've been sick for days.
Personal choice. Pros: prevents escape, reduces ceiling-fan + window strikes. Cons: removes natural instinct + exercise, can cause psychological issues in some birds, requires regrowth + retrim cycle. Modern thinking: secure the room (windows shut, fans off, dogs out) + don't trim. If you do trim, both wings symmetrical, only outer primaries.
Sometimes โ watery droppings can mean: stress (recently moved cage = normal short-term), high water/fruit intake (normal), kidney disease, bacterial infection, lead poisoning, egg-binding in females. Watery + lethargic + fluffed = same-day vet. Watery alone with normal energy = monitor 24h, vet if not normalising.
