English Mastiff
Massive ancient guardian — calm, dignified, affectionate. Among the heaviest dog breeds.
The English Mastiff is one of the oldest and largest dog breeds — depicted on Babylonian carvings 2,500 years ago and used as Roman war dogs. Today's Mastiff is far gentler than the war-dog past suggests: a calm, dignified, deeply affectionate giant whose courage is mostly used for snoozing.
Temperament
Calm, affectionate, dignified, protective. Mastiffs are famously good with children of their own family. Wary of strangers but rarely aggressive — they tend to body-block rather than attack.
Exercise needs
30–45 minutes a day of moderate walking. Heavy-bodied breeds shouldn't jog or run on hard surfaces. Puppies must avoid impact until 18 months+.
Grooming
Short coat, weekly brush. Drool prevention bibs help.
Common health issues
Bloat / GDV. Hip / elbow dysplasia. Cardiomyopathy. Cancers (lymphoma, osteosarcoma). Eye conditions. Lifespan 6–10 years.
👍 Best for
Calm households with space, owners who can budget for giant-breed care.
👎 Not best for
Active households, apartments, anyone unprepared for the drool.
