Bred by monks at the Saint Bernard Hospice in the Swiss Alps to rescue stranded travellers, the Saint Bernard is one of the most legendary working giants. Today's Saint is much more of a family companion β€” calm, kind and famously good with children. The famous neck-cask of brandy is mostly myth.

Temperament

Gentle, patient, friendly, quiet. Saints are renowned for their tolerance with children and other animals. They're slow to mature mentally β€” expect puppy behaviour for years.

Exercise needs

45–60 minutes of moderate daily exercise in cool weather. Heat-sensitive β€” limit summer exercise.

Grooming

Long-haired and short-haired varieties. Long: brush 3Γ— weekly. Short: weekly brush. Drool requires bibs.

Common health issues

Hip and elbow dysplasia. Bloat / GDV. Cardiomyopathy. Cancers. Wobbler syndrome. Heat stroke.

πŸ‘ Best for

Families with children, large homes, cool climates.

πŸ‘Ž Not best for

Hot climates, apartments, anyone bothered by drool or hair.
