Savannah
Hybrid of Serval and domestic cat. Striking, athletic, demanding — restricted in some places.
The Savannah was created in 1986 by crossing a domestic cat with the African Serval. Generations are labelled F1 (50% serval) through F5+ (mostly domestic). Striking, athletic, intensely active. Some F1–F3 generations are restricted or illegal in some jurisdictions.
Temperament
Bold, curious, dog-like, demanding. Often play fetch and walk on a harness.
Exercise needs
Very high. Need a catio, vertical space, interactive toys, often a feline companion.
Grooming
Short coat, weekly brush.
Common health issues
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. F1–F2 may have GI issues from non-domestic ancestry.
👍 Best for
Experienced active owners. Indoor-only with catio.
👎 Not best for
First-time cat owners. Households with small children. Many regions ban F1–F3.
