Savannah vs Sphynx

Side-by-side comparison of two popular breeds — temperament, exercise, grooming, lifespan and common health issues. Use it to decide which breed fits your home.

Savannah vs Sphynx — at a glance

The Savannah (3.5–11 kg, 12–20 years) and the Sphynx (3.5–5 kg, 8–14 years) sit in different — or sometimes overlapping — corners of dog ownership. Here's how they really compare for an everyday Irish or UK family.

Energy levels are well-matched between the Savannah and Sphynx — both need similar daily exercise.

Grooming is where these breeds really diverge: the Sphynx needs significantly more brushing, washing and coat care. Factor in €30–€80 every 6–8 weeks for a professional groomer if you don't do it yourself.

For a first-time owner, the Sphynx is much more forgiving than the Savannah.

Insurance premiums for breeds with brachycephalic, joint or cancer predispositions run 20–40% above average — check before you commit. We have a free quote calculator here.

Sphynx Sphynx

Temperament

Energetic, mischievous, intensely social, attention-seeking. Sphynx cats often follow their humans like dogs and can be jealous of a single owner's attention.

Exercise

Very active. Need play, climbing, mental enrichment. Many do well with another cat for company.

Grooming

Surprisingly high. Weekly bathing is essential — skin oils that fur normally absorbs build up on the skin. Wipe ears weekly. Sphynx feel cold easily and may need sweaters in winter.

Health

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM — DNA test). Skin issues. Heat sensitivity (sunburn risk). Dental disease.
