Pomeranian
Tiny, fluffy, vivacious. The smallest of the spitz breeds — bold and full of attitude.
The Pomeranian descends from large Spitz sled dogs of Pomerania (modern Germany/Poland). They were bred down dramatically — Queen Victoria reduced their size by ~50% during her reign. Today's "Pom" is a tiny, fluffy fireball with the temperament of a much larger dog.
Temperament
Lively, alert, vocal, bold. Poms can be snappy with strangers and other dogs without socialisation. They're intensely bonded to their owner.
Exercise needs
20–30 minutes of daily walking plus play. They love to "patrol" gardens.
Grooming
Heavy double coat needing 3–4× weekly brushing, more during seasonal moults. Most owners get a trim every 2–3 months.
Common health issues
Patellar luxation. Tracheal collapse (use a harness). Dental disease. Alopecia X (post-clipping coat loss). Heart problems.
👍 Best for
Apartment dwellers, retirees, allergy-tolerant owners.
👎 Not best for
Households with toddlers — Poms are fragile and may snap.
