What we'll be stocking

Popular dog breeds in Ireland

Labrador Retriever

Canis lupus familiaris

Level
Beginner-friendly
Size
25โ€“36 kg
Life
10โ€“14 yrs
Diet
Measured portions โ€” Labradors are food-obsessed and hit obesity fast
Habitat
House with a garden ideal; small flats are unkind unless you walk hours daily

Ireland's most popular dog for a reason โ€” friendly, trainable, brilliant with kids. Get from a hip + elbow-scored breeder, or rescue an adult; Lab-mixes fill every Irish shelter. Watch the food bowl: a fat Lab is a Lab in pain by 7.

Cocker Spaniel

Canis lupus familiaris

Level
Beginner / intermediate
Size
12โ€“16 kg
Life
12โ€“15 yrs
Diet
Standard quality kibble + measured treats
Habitat
House or flat with serious daily exercise

Affectionate, energetic working spaniel โ€” needs daily mental stimulation, not just walks. Working-line cockers are calmer than show lines despite higher energy. Watch ears โ€” long droopy ears trap moisture; weekly check is essential.

Border Collie

Canis lupus familiaris

Level
Advanced โ€” high energy + intelligence
Size
14โ€“20 kg
Life
12โ€“15 yrs
Diet
High-energy formula for working dogs; standard for pet companions
Habitat
Rural / active household โ€” under-stimulated Collies become destructive

The smartest breed on earth โ€” and it shows. Needs 2+ hours of structured exercise plus mental work daily (training, scent games, agility). Common in farming Ireland; an underused Collie in a city flat is a recipe for anxiety, herding behaviour and self-mutilation.

French Bulldog

Canis lupus familiaris

Level
Intermediate โ€” health-aware ownership
Size
8โ€“13 kg
Life
10โ€“12 yrs
Diet
Watch portions; prone to obesity which worsens breathing
Habitat
Flat or house โ€” low exercise needs but cannot tolerate heat

Massively popular but the most over-bred dog in Ireland. Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) is widespread โ€” choose a breeder using longer-snouted lines + DNA tests, or rescue. Use our Walk Safety Forecaster in summer.

Jack Russell Terrier

Canis lupus familiaris

Level
Intermediate
Size
5โ€“8 kg
Life
13โ€“16 yrs
Diet
High-energy; small dog formula in measured meals
Habitat
Anywhere with proper exercise โ€” JRTs are working terriers, not lap dogs

Tiny dog, terrier brain โ€” bold, loud, prey-driven, will dig your garden into rubble. Brilliant with experienced owners; tough on first-timers. Strong recall training is non-negotiable; off-lead JRTs disappear after squirrels and rabbits.

Setup essentials โ€” get these right or don't start

๐Ÿ†”

Microchip + ID tag โ€” both legally required

In Ireland every dog over 12 weeks must be microchipped + registered (Animark, FidoChipsIreland, etc.) AND wear a collar with the owner's name and address. Both are checked by Dog Wardens โ€” โ‚ฌ100 fines for non-compliance. Update the chip database any time you move house.

๐Ÿ“œ

Dog Licence โ€” โ‚ฌ20/year, mandatory

Every owner of a dog over 4 months must hold a current Dog Licence (โ‚ฌ20 individual / โ‚ฌ140 lifetime). Buy it online at dogs.ie or at any Post Office. The Garda + Dog Wardens can spot-check; on-the-spot fine for no licence is โ‚ฌ100.

โš–๏ธ

Restricted breeds: extra rules

Ireland's "restricted breeds" list (American Pit Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Bull Mastiff, Doberman, English Bull Terrier, German Shepherd, Japanese Akita, Japanese Tosa, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Rottweiler) must be muzzled and on a strong short lead in public, and only handled by a person 16+. The XL Bully ban (2024) added another restriction โ€” check current Department of Rural & Community Development guidance.

๐Ÿ’‰

Core vaccines + parasites

Core: distemper, parvo, hepatitis, leptospirosis (annual L4). Add kennel cough if your dog meets others (parks, daycare, boarding). Year-round flea + tick + worm cover; Ireland's mild winters keep parasites active 12 months a year. Lungworm is endemic โ€” use a wormer that covers it.

๐Ÿฆด

Right-size bed + crate

Bed: long enough that the dog can stretch fully. Crate (if used): tall enough to stand without ducking, long enough to lie flat. Use crates as positive resting spaces, never as punishment. Most dogs over 3 graduate out of crates entirely.

๐Ÿง

Force-free training from week one

Modern training is reward-based โ€” no jerks, no shouting, no "alpha" nonsense. Find an IMDT or APDT-accredited trainer in your area. Puppy classes from 12 weeks; adult dogs benefit at any age. Most "behaviour problems" are unmet exercise + enrichment needs.

๐Ÿ’ฐ

Insurance or emergency fund

A single soft-tissue surgery in Ireland can hit โ‚ฌ3,000โ€“โ‚ฌ6,000. Either insure (โ‚ฌ20โ€“โ‚ฌ60/month for lifetime cover with a โ‚ฌ5k+ annual limit) or self-insure with a dedicated emergency fund. Get cover before symptoms appear โ€” pre-existing conditions are excluded.

๐Ÿ“ฆ We're stocking up

Our dogs range goes live as we vet suppliers โ€” we won't list anything we wouldn't use ourselves. In the meantime, our calculators, breed guides and AI vet tools below are free and don't need stock.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a dog licence in Ireland?

Yes โ€” every dog over 4 months needs a current licence (โ‚ฌ20/year individual or โ‚ฌ140 lifetime). Buy it at dogs.ie or any Post Office. The Garda and local Dog Wardens can request to see it; on-the-spot fine for no licence is โ‚ฌ100.

Is microchipping mandatory for dogs in Ireland?

Yes โ€” in force since 2016 for all dogs over 12 weeks. The chip must be implanted by a vet (or qualified implanter) and registered on an approved database (Animark, FidoChipsIreland are the main two). Update registration whenever you move; an unregistered chip is functionally useless if your dog goes missing.

What's the best first dog for an Irish family?

Adopt-a-Mongrel from any Irish rescue (DSPCA, ISPCA, Dogs Trust) is the answer for most families โ€” adult dogs come temperament-tested and most rescues will refuse a bad match rather than push it through. Among purebreds: Labrador, Golden Retriever, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (health-tested lines only) and Cocker Spaniel are forgiving of first-time owners.

How much does it cost to keep a dog in Ireland?

Year-one budget (2026): โ‚ฌ0โ€“โ‚ฌ500 from a rescue (or โ‚ฌ800โ€“โ‚ฌ2,500 from a reputable breeder), โ‚ฌ200โ€“โ‚ฌ500 setup (bed, crate, lead, bowls, training class). Ongoing: โ‚ฌ40โ€“โ‚ฌ100/month food + treats, โ‚ฌ100โ€“โ‚ฌ300/year vet (vaccines, flea/worm), โ‚ฌ240โ€“โ‚ฌ720/year insurance OR a self-insurance fund. Major surgery if it happens: โ‚ฌ1,500โ€“โ‚ฌ6,000.

Are XL Bullies and other "restricted breeds" legal in Ireland?

XL Bullies were banned in Ireland from October 2024 โ€” no new ownership, existing owners must comply with strict licensing, neutering and muzzling rules. The wider "restricted breeds" list (American Pit Bull, Rottweiler, Doberman, German Shepherd, Akita, Tosa, Bull Mastiff, English Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Bull Mastiff, Rhodesian Ridgeback) requires muzzling and a strong short lead in public, plus a handler aged 16+. Check current Department of Rural & Community Development guidance โ€” rules change.

Should I get pet insurance?

For most owners: yes. A single cruciate ligament surgery is โ‚ฌ3,000โ€“โ‚ฌ5,000 in Ireland; emergency overnight care can run โ‚ฌ500โ€“โ‚ฌ1,500. Compare lifetime policies (cover renews each year) over annual policies (drop your dog the moment it's expensive). Read exclusions carefully โ€” most policies exclude pre-existing conditions, dental, and breeding-related costs.
