Ireland's most popular dog for a reason — friendly, trainable, brilliant with kids. Get from a hip + elbow-scored breeder, or rescue an adult; Lab-mixes fill every Irish shelter. Watch the food bowl: a fat Lab is a Lab in pain by 7.

Affectionate, energetic working spaniel — needs daily mental stimulation, not just walks. Working-line cockers are calmer than show lines despite higher energy. Watch ears — long droopy ears trap moisture; weekly check is essential.

The smartest breed on earth — and it shows. Needs 2+ hours of structured exercise plus mental work daily (training, scent games, agility). Common in farming Ireland; an underused Collie in a city flat is a recipe for anxiety, herding behaviour and self-mutilation.

Tiny dog, terrier brain — bold, loud, prey-driven, will dig your garden into rubble. Brilliant with experienced owners; tough on first-timers. Strong recall training is non-negotiable; off-lead JRTs disappear after squirrels and rabbits.
In Ireland every dog over 12 weeks must be microchipped + registered (Animark, FidoChipsIreland, etc.) AND wear a collar with the owner's name and address. Both are checked by Dog Wardens — €100 fines for non-compliance. Update the chip database any time you move house.
Every owner of a dog over 4 months must hold a current Dog Licence (€20 individual / €140 lifetime). Buy it online at dogs.ie or at any Post Office. The Garda + Dog Wardens can spot-check; on-the-spot fine for no licence is €100.
Ireland's "restricted breeds" list (American Pit Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Bull Mastiff, Doberman, English Bull Terrier, German Shepherd, Japanese Akita, Japanese Tosa, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Rottweiler) must be muzzled and on a strong short lead in public, and only handled by a person 16+. The XL Bully ban (2024) added another restriction — check current Department of Rural & Community Development guidance.
Core: distemper, parvo, hepatitis, leptospirosis (annual L4). Add kennel cough if your dog meets others (parks, daycare, boarding). Year-round flea + tick + worm cover; Ireland's mild winters keep parasites active 12 months a year. Lungworm is endemic — use a wormer that covers it.
Bed: long enough that the dog can stretch fully. Crate (if used): tall enough to stand without ducking, long enough to lie flat. Use crates as positive resting spaces, never as punishment. Most dogs over 3 graduate out of crates entirely.
Modern training is reward-based — no jerks, no shouting, no "alpha" nonsense. Find an IMDT or APDT-accredited trainer in your area. Puppy classes from 12 weeks; adult dogs benefit at any age. Most "behaviour problems" are unmet exercise + enrichment needs.
A single soft-tissue surgery in Ireland can hit €3,000–€6,000. Either insure (€20–€60/month for lifetime cover with a €5k+ annual limit) or self-insure with a dedicated emergency fund. Get cover before symptoms appear — pre-existing conditions are excluded.

Yes — in force since 2016 for all dogs over 12 weeks. The chip must be implanted by a vet (or qualified implanter) and registered on an approved database (Animark, FidoChipsIreland are the main two). Update registration whenever you move; an unregistered chip is functionally useless if your dog goes missing.
Adopt-a-Mongrel from any Irish rescue (DSPCA, ISPCA, Dogs Trust) is the answer for most families — adult dogs come temperament-tested and most rescues will refuse a bad match rather than push it through. Among purebreds: Labrador, Golden Retriever, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (health-tested lines only) and Cocker Spaniel are forgiving of first-time owners.
Year-one budget (2026): €0–€500 from a rescue (or €800–€2,500 from a reputable breeder), €200–€500 setup (bed, crate, lead, bowls, training class). Ongoing: €40–€100/month food + treats, €100–€300/year vet (vaccines, flea/worm), €240–€720/year insurance OR a self-insurance fund. Major surgery if it happens: €1,500–€6,000.
XL Bullies were banned in Ireland from October 2024 — no new ownership, existing owners must comply with strict licensing, neutering and muzzling rules. The wider "restricted breeds" list (American Pit Bull, Rottweiler, Doberman, German Shepherd, Akita, Tosa, Bull Mastiff, English Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Bull Mastiff, Rhodesian Ridgeback) requires muzzling and a strong short lead in public, plus a handler aged 16+. Check current Department of Rural & Community Development guidance — rules change.
For most owners: yes. A single cruciate ligament surgery is €3,000–€5,000 in Ireland; emergency overnight care can run €500–€1,500. Compare lifetime policies (cover renews each year) over annual policies (drop your dog the moment it's expensive). Read exclusions carefully — most policies exclude pre-existing conditions, dental, and breeding-related costs.
