Dog Beds And Blankets

Dog beds & blankets โ€” bigger, better, washable

A dog sleeps 12โ€“14 hours a day; a senior up to 18. The bed matters as much as the food. Most pet-shop beds are too small, can't be washed, and lose their shape in 6 months. Here's how to buy a bed your dog will actually use, plus the orthopaedic upgrade every dog over 7 deserves.

What we'll be stocking

Bed types

Orthopaedic memory-foam

Solid memory-foam slab (NOT shredded foam). Distributes weight, supports arthritic joints, reduces pressure sores. Essential for any dog over 7 and any large breed at any age. Brands like Big Barker, Hurtta, Tuffies. โ‚ฌ100โ€“โ‚ฌ350.

Bolster bed

Raised side cushion to lean against. Most dogs prefer this โ€” they sleep with their head propped, the way wolves curl. Looks like a sofa, sits in living room. Pick removable washable covers โ€” fixed covers go grim in months.

Donut / nest bed

Faux-fur ring beds (Calming Bed style) โ€” small + medium dogs love to curl in them. Anxiety-reducing for nervous dogs. Wash in pillowcase to stop fluff in the machine. Not for dogs that destroy bedding.

Cooling beds

Gel-pad or self-cooling crystal pads for summer. Ireland summer matters less than you'd think โ€” but on the few 25 ยฐC+ weeks, brachycephalic breeds (Frenchies, Pugs, Bulldogs) genuinely need them. Place in shade, never direct sun.

Chew-proof / heavy-duty

Kuranda, K9 Ballistics โ€” frame + tough fabric, no stuffing to disembowel. For destructive chewers + crate use. Less cushioned, but the only style that survives a teething Lab puppy or a separation-anxiety chewer.

What to look for when buying

๐Ÿ“

Size = nose to tail + 15 cm

Measure the dog stretched out. Add 15 cm minimum. A bed that's "just big enough when curled" is too small โ€” dogs need to spread out for thermoregulation. Most pet-shop "Large" beds are actually Medium. Buy big and they'll grow into it.

๐Ÿงผ

Removable, machine-wash cover

Non-removable cover = dirty bed forever. Look for zip-off covers rated 30โ€“60 ยฐC wash. Bonus: a waterproof inner liner (incontinence in seniors, muddy paws in winter). A bed with no removable cover gets binned in a year.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ

Foam grade matters

Cheap "memory foam" is shredded foam offcuts in a pillow โ€” flattens in 6 months. Real orthopaedic uses solid CertiPUR-US foam blocks, density 35โ€“50 kg/mยณ. Check the spec sheet โ€” if it just says "memory foam filling", assume the cheap kind.

๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Position in the home

Not in direct sun (overheats), not on cold tile (joints hurt), not in a hallway (no rest), not next to a radiator (dehydrates). Ideal: corner of the lounge, beside but not on a draft. Older dogs benefit from a second bed in the bedroom.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ

The seven-fold blanket trick

For anxious or rescue dogs: an old fleece blanket folded seven times forms a thick, scent-laden "den". Most rescues settle on a folded blanket faster than a brand-new bed โ€” pick the bed they choose, then upgrade.

๐Ÿ“ฆ We're stocking up

Our dog beds and blankets range goes live as we vet suppliers โ€” we won't list anything we wouldn't use ourselves. In the meantime, our calculators, breed guides and AI vet tools below are free and don't need stock.

Frequently asked questions

How big should the bed be?

Measure your dog stretched out (nose to base of tail) and add 15 cm. A 60 cm dog needs a 75 cm bed minimum, and bigger if they sprawl. Most owners buy a size too small โ€” when in doubt, size up.

When should I switch to an orthopaedic bed?

Any time your dog shows stiffness rising, slowing on walks, struggling on stairs โ€” typically age 7+ in big breeds, 9+ in small breeds. Don't wait for a diagnosis; orthopaedic beds also help prevent pressure sores and support deep, restful sleep at any age.

My dog ignores the bed I bought โ€” why?

Three common reasons: (1) too small, (2) too firm or too soft (test by pressing โ€” fingers shouldn't touch the floor), (3) wrong location (too cold, too noisy, in a draft). Move the existing bed to a different spot for 3 days before buying a new one.

Are calming / donut beds proven?

There's no strong study, but anecdotally many anxious dogs do settle better in a curled, walled bed. The mechanism is likely the snug-fit + weight feeling like a "thunder shirt". Cheap to try; not a substitute for behavioural support if anxiety is severe.
