Refillable, so it does not die after a fortnight
Most catnip toys are interesting for about two weeks, then the catnip loses potency and the toy is ignored. These have a pocket you can refill, which is the difference between a toy that lasts and one that ends up under the sofa.
What they are for
- Chewing — cats chew as well as scratch, and cotton rope gives them something appropriate to work on.
- Some dental benefit — the rope fibres rub against the teeth as they chew. Helpful, but not a substitute for actual dental care.
- Three in the pack — leave them in different rooms rather than all in one spot.
Good to know
Roughly one cat in three does not respond to catnip at all — it is hereditary, and kittens under about six months rarely react. Replace a rope once it starts shedding long loose strands, which can be swallowed. Catnip toys are for supervised play, not to be left with a cat that eats fabric.
