Pet bird supplies + care guides for Irish keepers

Birds are smart, social, and live longer than most owners expect โ€” a budgie can hit 12 years, an African Grey 50+. We're building a serious starter range of cages, perches, food and toys. While we stock up, here are the species, the setup essentials, and the safety rules that keep birds healthy.

What we'll be stocking

Popular species in Ireland

Budgerigar (Budgie)

Melopsittacus undulatus

Level
Beginner-friendly
Size
18 cm
Life
8โ€“12 yrs
Diet
Pellets + fresh veg + small seed mix
Habitat
Cage 80 ร— 50 ร— 60 cm minimum (single); bar spacing 10โ€“12 mm
Climate
Room temperature 18โ€“24 ยฐC, away from draughts and kitchen fumes
Lighting
Daylight or full-spectrum bulb 4 h/day for vitamin D3

The world's most kept pet bird for good reason โ€” small, sociable, can learn to talk and sit on a finger. Best kept in pairs unless you can give one bird hours of daily interaction. Out-of-cage flight time is non-negotiable.

Cockatiel

Nymphicus hollandicus

Level
Beginner / intermediate
Size
30โ€“35 cm
Life
15โ€“25 yrs
Diet
Pellets + fresh veg + sprouted seeds + small grains
Habitat
Cage 100 ร— 60 ร— 100 cm minimum; bar spacing 12โ€“18 mm
Climate
Room temperature; avoid scented candles and aerosols
Lighting
Full-spectrum bulb or daily window time (no glass between bird and sun)

Affectionate, whistles well, learns simple tunes. Males are typically more vocal; both sexes form strong bonds with their humans. Hand-reared cockatiels handle beautifully but can become dependent โ€” give them solo confidence-building.

Canary

Serinus canaria domestica

Level
Beginner-friendly (hands-off)
Size
12โ€“14 cm
Life
8โ€“12 yrs
Diet
Quality canary seed mix + fresh greens + occasional pellets
Habitat
Cage 60 ร— 40 ร— 50 cm minimum (longer = more flight); bar spacing 10โ€“12 mm
Climate
15โ€“22 ยฐC; sensitive to draughts and sudden temperature swings
Lighting
Full-spectrum bulb or window light (no direct midday sun)

A "watch and listen" pet, not a handling pet. The males sing beautifully (especially Roller and Waterslager strains); females generally do not. House one bird per cage outside breeding โ€” males will fight.

Lovebird

Agapornis spp.

Level
Intermediate
Size
13โ€“17 cm
Life
15โ€“20 yrs
Diet
Pellets + fresh veg + small parrot seed mix + sprouted greens
Habitat
Cage 80 ร— 60 ร— 80 cm minimum (pair); bar spacing 10โ€“12 mm
Climate
Room temperature; humidity 50% helps feather condition
Lighting
Full-spectrum bulb 4โ€“6 h/day

Tiny parrots with huge personalities. Misnamed โ€” they don't need a partner to thrive but they DO need lots of enrichment and your time. A bored lovebird is a destructive lovebird. Be ready for nipping during hormonal spikes.

African Grey Parrot

Psittacus erithacus

Level
Advanced โ€” lifetime commitment
Size
33 cm
Life
40โ€“60 yrs
Diet
High-quality pellets + fresh veg + nuts + sprouted seeds (avoid all-sunflower)
Habitat
Cage 120 ร— 90 ร— 150 cm minimum + daily out-of-cage time; bar spacing 19โ€“22 mm
Climate
Room temperature; very sensitive to fumes and air-quality
Lighting
Full-spectrum bulb essential; sunlight where safe

Among the most intelligent animals on earth โ€” emotionally complex, prone to anxiety and feather-plucking when neglected. CITES Annex A โ€” Article 10 paperwork required. If you can't commit 4+ hours of interaction daily for 50 years, choose a different species.

Setup essentials โ€” get these right or don't start

๐Ÿ“

Right-size cage (bigger always)

A bird should be able to fully extend its wings without touching the bars and fly across the cage in 2โ€“3 wing beats. The minimums above are minimums โ€” double them if you can. Floor space matters more than height for most species.

๐Ÿชต

Varied natural perches

Three perch diameters minimum, made of natural wood (apple, willow, manzanita). Dowel-only perches cause foot sores and arthritis. Avoid sandpaper covers โ€” they wear pads raw, not nails.

๐Ÿฅฌ

Pellets + fresh, never seed-only

An all-seed diet is the #1 killer of pet birds โ€” fatty liver, vitamin A deficiency, obesity. 60โ€“70% high-quality pellets, 20โ€“30% fresh vegetables and sprouted seeds, the rest as treats. Transition slowly if your bird is seed-addicted.

๐Ÿšซ

Kill the kitchen hazards

Non-stick (PTFE / Teflon) cookware off-gases at high heat and kills birds within minutes โ€” even from another room. Same for self-cleaning ovens, scented candles, plug-in air fresheners, aerosols, smoke. Cook with stainless or cast iron only.

๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ

Daily out-of-cage flight

Cages are bedrooms, not full-time enclosures. Most birds need 2โ€“4 hours of supervised flight time daily in a bird-proofed room (windows covered, ceiling fans off, doors closed, water bowls covered, no other pets present).

๐Ÿงฉ

Foraging + rotating toys

In the wild, birds spend most of their day looking for food. Hide pellets in shreddable toys. Rotate toys weekly to keep novelty up. Boredom is the root of feather-plucking, screaming and self-harm.

โ˜€๏ธ

Full-spectrum light

Window glass blocks UV. Most pet birds need a full-spectrum bulb (Arcadia Bird, Zoo Med AvianSun) for 4โ€“6 h a day to make vitamin D3. Without it: weak bones, eggbinding in females, plumage problems.

๐Ÿ“ฆ We're stocking up

Our birds range goes live as we vet suppliers โ€” we won't list anything we wouldn't use ourselves. In the meantime, our calculators, breed guides and AI vet tools below are free and don't need stock.

Frequently asked questions

Are pet birds legal in Ireland?

Most common pet species (budgies, cockatiels, canaries, lovebirds, conures) are legal to keep without a permit. CITES-listed species โ€” African Greys, many macaws, some cockatoos โ€” require Article 10 paperwork from the seller. Keeping native Irish wild birds is illegal under the Wildlife Acts.

Are birds good first pets for kids?

Budgies and cockatiels can be โ€” they're sociable and forgiving. But birds are noisy, messy, and live longer than most childhoods. The adult must be the legal owner, primary caregiver, and willing to commit for the full lifespan. Quiet birds (canaries) are better for sound-sensitive households.

How much does a starter setup cost?

Realistic budget for a beginner-friendly species in Ireland (2026): โ‚ฌ200โ€“โ‚ฌ450 for the bird itself, plus โ‚ฌ250โ€“โ‚ฌ500 for a properly sized cage + perches + initial food + toys. Then โ‚ฌ20โ€“โ‚ฌ40/month for food, fresh produce and toy rotation. The cage is where most beginners under-spend โ€” buy bigger than you think.

Where do I find a bird vet in Ireland?

UCD Veterinary Hospital (Dublin) sees exotics including birds. Several private practices in Dublin, Cork and Galway have avian-experienced vets โ€” call ahead and ask "do you see budgies / parrots / canaries?" before booking. Sick birds hide symptoms until critical, so register with an avian vet BEFORE you need one.

Should I get one bird or two?

Depends on the species and your time. Budgies and finches are happiest in pairs โ€” they need bird company. Cockatiels and parrots can do well solo if you provide hours of daily interaction. Two parrots of the same species often bond with each other and turn semi-feral toward humans, which most owners regret.

What's the most common mistake new bird owners make?

A close tie between (1) feeding an all-seed diet and (2) using non-stick cookware in the same building as the bird. Both are silent killers โ€” by the time symptoms appear, the damage is usually fatal. Pellets + fresh veg from day one, and stainless / cast iron cookware only.
