Pet Insurance Premium Estimator
Estimate your pet's monthly insurance premium in 30 seconds.
Pet insurance premiums vary by 5× between low-risk and high-risk pets — a young mixed-breed cat in a rural area can be insured for €10/month, while a 9-year-old French Bulldog in a city can cost €100+. This calculator gives an evidence-based estimate based on species, breed risk, age, neutered status and country, so you know what to expect before quoting.
How this calculator works
The estimator combines five factors that all major insurers use:
- Species: dogs are typically 1.5–2× the cost of cats.
- Breed risk: Bulldogs, French Bulldogs and Pugs are 2–3× higher than mixed breeds; Persians similarly for cats.
- Age: premiums rise sharply after age 7. Some insurers won't take new pets over age 8.
- Cover level: Lifetime is 1.5–2× a time-limited policy but pays out for chronic conditions year after year.
- Country: US is generally most expensive, EU/UK mid, depending on local vet costs.
Always quote 3+ providers — same pet, same cover, premiums can vary by 30%+.
Frequently asked questions
Should I get insurance or self-insure?
For most pets, insurance is worthwhile — average lifetime claim is €3,000–€5,000 and a single emergency surgery can exceed €4,000. Self-insurance only makes sense if you can comfortably set aside €60+/month and never touch it.
Why does the premium go up every year?
Age (claim risk rises) and inflation in vet costs. Lifetime policies typically rise 8–15% per year — this is normal industry-wide.
Are pre-existing conditions covered?
Almost never. Insure your pet young and stay continuously insured to keep conditions covered.
