Poop Bags Waste Disposal

๐Ÿ’ฉ Poop bags + waste

Poop bags & waste disposal โ€” the unglamorous essentials

Under the Litter Pollution Act, leaving dog waste in a public place can mean an on-the-spot โ‚ฌ150 fine in Ireland (up to โ‚ฌ4,000 in court). Even biodegradable bags need to actually go in a bin. Here's the kit, the rules, and what "compostable" really means on the label.

Bag + tool types

Certified compostable bags

EN 13432 / TรœV OK Compost certification โ€” break down in industrial composting in 12 weeks. Plant-based (cornstarch). Ireland: don't put in the brown bin (most councils don't accept dog waste). Best as the "least guilty" plastic alternative.

Biodegradable plastic bags

Marketed as "eco" but degrade into microplastics, not compost. Better than nothing, not as good as certified compostable. Look at the small print: if it doesn't cite EN 13432 or ASTM D6400, treat it as plastic.

Standard plastic bags

Cheap, leak-proof, easy. Reused supermarket bags work. Worst on environment, best on burst-protection. Use double-bag for nervous-tummy dogs. Roll-style bags with tie-off handles save fingertip wrestling on cold days.

Garden waste-bins (multi-dog homes)

Sealed, ventilated outdoor bins (Pet Genie / Doggie Dooley) for back-garden poop. Charcoal filters cut smell. Empty into general waste once it's sealed. Worth it for households with 2+ dogs.

Pooper-scoopers + bag dispensers

Long-handle scoopers for back-garden cleanup (knee-saving for older owners). Lead-attached bag dispensers (Earth Rated, Trixie) so you never leave the house without bags. Bag-on-lead is the move.

Size + thickness

Length 32โ€“35 cm minimum (covers your wrist). Thickness 18 microns+ for big dogs (a Lab's output WILL burst a thin bag). Earth Rated 17 micron + Bags On Board 24 micron are popular tested choices. Cheap supermarket-brand bags fail at the worst time.

Read the label honestly

"Eco-friendly" / "biodegradable" โ€” meaningless without certification. "Compostable" โ€” needs EN 13432 or TรœV OK Compost / ASTM D6400 to be real. Most "biodegradable" bags fragment to microplastics in landfill, not compost.

Irish disposal rules

General-waste (black/grey) bin โ€” always allowed. Brown / compost bin โ€” usually NOT (check your council, most ban pet waste). Public street bin โ€” fine. Drain or hedgerow โ€” illegal under the Litter Pollution Act, โ‚ฌ150 on-the-spot fine.

โš–๏ธ

Litter Pollution Act 1997

Failing to clean up = on-the-spot โ‚ฌ150 (litter warden), or up to โ‚ฌ4,000 court fine. Wardens patrol popular dog-walking spots in every council area. "I forgot a bag" is not a defence. Carry spares + a clip-on dispenser.

๐Ÿšฎ

Where to put the tied bag

Public bin: yes (yes, even though "but it's a binbag inside a bin"). Home: general waste only. Compost heap: NO โ€” pet waste carries pathogens (Toxocara, Giardia). Garden bury (deep, away from veg): possible but check local council bylaws.

Frequently asked questions

Are biodegradable poop bags actually better?

Only if certified EN 13432 or ASTM D6400 โ€” and only if they reach an industrial composter (most don't in Ireland). Uncertified "biodegradable" bags fragment to microplastics in landfill, no better than plastic. The honest answer: any bag, used + binned, beats unbagged poop.

Can I put dog poop in the brown / compost bin?

In Ireland, almost all councils say NO โ€” pet waste carries Toxocara + other pathogens that survive municipal composting. General waste only. Some councils run separate pet-waste bin schemes (rare). Check your council website to be sure.

How many bags do I actually go through?

A 25 kg dog produces 250โ€“400 g of waste a day, usually 2โ€“3 bags. Annual: 800โ€“1,000 bags per dog. Buy in bulk packs of 800โ€“1,200 โ€” much cheaper per bag than 50-packs at the supermarket.

What's the fine for not picking up?

โ‚ฌ150 on-the-spot (Litter Pollution Act 1997, issued by litter wardens). If you contest and lose in court, up to โ‚ฌ4,000. Repeated offences are prosecuted. Most councils run hidden-warden patrols at popular dog-walking spots.
