Breakaway is the only kind a cat should wear
A cat that catches its collar on a branch, a fence or a furniture leg must be able to pull free. A breakaway buckle releases under sustained pressure — that is the entire point, and it is why a standard buckle collar is genuinely dangerous on a cat.
Why a 12-pack is not overkill
- They come off, by design. A cat that goes out will lose collars. Twelve means you actually replace them.
- Reflective stitching — visibility for a cat crossing a road at dusk.
- Removable bells — warns birds; take them off if the jingling bothers your cat.
Good to know
Fit two fingers under the collar: tight enough not to snag a jaw or leg, loose enough to release. Check the fit on a growing kitten every couple of weeks. A collar is not a substitute for a microchip — chips are permanent and are how a lost cat actually gets home. Microchipping is a legal requirement for cats in Ireland.
