Basset Hound vs Dachshund

Side-by-side comparison of two popular breeds — temperament, exercise, grooming, lifespan and common health issues. Use it to decide which breed fits your home.

Basset Hound vs Dachshund — at a glance

The Basset Hound (20–29 kg, 12–13 years) and the Dachshund (7–14 kg (standard), 4–5 kg (mini), 12–16 years) sit in different — or sometimes overlapping — corners of dog ownership. Here's how they really compare for an everyday Irish or UK family.

Both breeds have similar energy demands — Dachshund tips slightly higher but neither is a couch dog.

Both have manageable grooming routines — the Basset Hound demands slightly more, but neither needs daily fuss.

Insurance premiums for breeds with brachycephalic, joint or cancer predispositions run 20–40% above average — check before you commit. We have a free quote calculator here.

Basset Hound Basset Hound

Temperament

Easy-going, friendly, stubborn, vocal. Bassets are gentle with children and tolerant of other pets. Famously hard to train without food motivation.

Exercise

45–60 minutes of daily moderate walking. They're slow but have stamina.

Grooming

Short coat, brush weekly. Long ears need weekly cleaning. Wrinkles need weekly wipe. Drooling is significant.

Health

Intervertebral disc disease (long backs). Bloat / GDV. Ear infections (long, low ears). Glaucoma. Obesity (food-driven).

Dachshund Dachshund

Temperament

Bold, curious, vocal, sometimes stubborn. Dachshunds bond intensely with their family and are wary of strangers. Known for being persistent barkers and natural diggers (it's in the bones).

Exercise

40–60 minutes of flat walking daily. Avoid stairs, jumping on/off furniture, and long walks before 12 months — all increase IVDD risk. Use ramps; carry up stairs.

Grooming

Three coat varieties: smooth (weekly brush), long-haired (3× weekly), and wire-haired (weekly + occasional hand-stripping). All shed moderately.

Health

Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) — affects roughly 1 in 4 Dachshunds. Insurance covers this on most policies but premiums are higher. Obesity worsens IVDD risk dramatically. Also: dental crowding, eye conditions.
