Beagle vs English Springer Spaniel

Side-by-side comparison of two popular breeds — temperament, exercise, grooming, lifespan and common health issues. Use it to decide which breed fits your home.

Beagle vs English Springer Spaniel — at a glance

The Beagle (9–14 kg, 12–15 years) and the English Springer Spaniel (18–25 kg, 12–14 years) sit in different — or sometimes overlapping — corners of dog ownership. Here's how they really compare for an everyday Irish or UK family.

Energy levels are well-matched between the Beagle and English Springer Spaniel — both need similar daily exercise.

On trainability, the English Springer Spaniel is markedly easier to train — picks up cues fast, stays focused. The Beagle is more independent and rewards patience over volume.

Grooming is where these breeds really diverge: the English Springer Spaniel needs significantly more brushing, washing and coat care. Factor in €30–€80 every 6–8 weeks for a professional groomer if you don't do it yourself.

Insurance premiums for breeds with brachycephalic, joint or cancer predispositions run 20–40% above average — check before you commit. We have a free quote calculator here.

Beagle Beagle

Temperament

Friendly, curious, merry. Beagles are pack animals at heart — they generally love other dogs and need company; many do poorly as only dogs in homes that are empty all day. Gentle with kids, friendly with strangers.

Exercise

60 minutes a day plus scent work. Beagles need a long-line or secure garden — once they catch a scent, recall is unreliable. Sniffing walks are mentally tiring; combine with short fetch or training sessions.

Grooming

Smooth, short double coat. Weekly brush is enough (more during shedding). Long ears need weekly check and cleaning to prevent infection. Bathe every 8–12 weeks.

Health

Generally robust, often living to 14+. Watch for: epilepsy, intervertebral disc disease, ear infections (long ears trap moisture), hypothyroidism, and obesity (beagles will eat anything, anytime).
