Pets sleep a lot more than people expect โ adult dogs average 12โ14 hours a day, adult cats 12โ16 hours, and senior pets often 18+ hours. Too little or too much sleep can both signal problems. This calculator gives a personalised sleep target based on species, age and activity level.
How this calculator works
The calculator uses age- and species-based norms: puppies and kittens 18โ22h, adults 12โ16h, seniors 16โ20h. Active and working pets sleep less by 1โ2 hours; very low-activity pets often sleep more.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my cat sleep so much?
Cats are crepuscular hunters โ biologically wired to nap during the day and be active at dawn/dusk. 14โ16 hours of sleep per day is completely normal.
My dog suddenly sleeps a lot more โ should I worry?
Sudden changes in sleep can signal pain, illness or hypothyroidism (especially in dogs). If lethargy lasts more than 48 hours, see a vet.
