Work out a safe medication dose based on weight.

Medication doses for pets are calculated by body weight (mg per kg). A small error can mean a sub-therapeutic dose or, worse, toxicity. This calculator multiplies your pet's weight by the prescribed mg/kg and works out the volume from the medication's concentration. Always confirm the dose with your vet before giving any medication.

How this calculator works

Dose per administration = (weight ร— mg/kg) รท medication concentration. The result is in millilitres for liquids or tablets for solid medication. Many medications also have a maximum total daily dose โ€” always check the prescribing information.

Never give human medication to pets without veterinary advice. Common painkillers like ibuprofen and paracetamol are highly toxic to cats and dogs.

Can I use this for human medications?

No. Many human medications are toxic to pets even at small doses. Use this calculator only for medications prescribed by your vet for your pet.

What if I miss a dose?

Give it as soon as you remember unless it's nearly time for the next dose. Never double-dose.

My pet spat out the tablet โ€” should I redose?

Only if you're sure no medication was absorbed. If unsure, call your vet rather than risk a double dose.
