Bowls And Feeders Cats

๐Ÿฅฃ Cat bowls + feeders

Cat bowls, fountains & feeders โ€” get hydration right

Cats are evolved desert hunters โ€” they get most of their water from prey, and modern indoor cats on dry food often run mildly dehydrated all their lives. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is the #1 cause of death in cats over 10. The right bowl + a fountain measurably increase water intake and slow the disease curve.

What we'll be stocking

Bowl + feeder types

Whisker-friendly shallow bowl

Wide + shallow ceramic or stainless. Avoids "whisker fatigue" โ€” cats hate their whiskers brushing the sides of deep bowls. Brands: Dr Catsby, NeaterPet. Many cats refuse food in narrow deep bowls and owners blame "fussiness".

Ceramic dish (food)

Heavy (won't slide), hygienic, dishwasher-safe. Lead-free certified glaze only. Allergic to plastic-bowl chin acne is a real thing in cats โ€” ceramic or stainless solves it. Replace if glaze cracks.

Water fountain

Cats prefer running water (instinct โ€” still water in the wild = stagnant). A fountain doubles or triples daily intake on average. PetSafe Drinkwell, Catit, Pioneer Pet Raindrop. Filter monthly, deep-clean weekly. ESSENTIAL for senior cats.

Automatic timed feeder

Multi-meal portion control. PetSafe, Sure Petcare. For overweight cats on a diet (small frequent meals), multi-cat households (Sure Feed reads microchips), or working long shifts. Use only with dry food unless the model has cooling.

Slow / puzzle feeder

Slows fast eaters + adds enrichment. Doc & Phoebe Indoor Hunting Feeder makes the cat hunt 5 small "mice" of kibble. Catit Senses food maze. Better health outcomes than free-feeding. See cat-toys for full enrichment guide.

Hydration + feeding rules

๐Ÿ’ง

Hydration is the single biggest health lever

Indoor cat on dry food only = chronically dehydrated. Easy fixes: water fountain (2โ€“3ร— more drinking), wet food half their diet (75% water), multiple water stations around the house, never next to food (cats avoid drinking near where they eat โ€” instinct).

๐Ÿ“

Whisker-fatigue rule

Bowl wider than the cat's widest whisker spread. Most "cat bowls" sold by big brands are too narrow + too deep. Test: cat eats from the centre fine, refuses to clean up the edges โ†’ whisker fatigue. Switch to a saucer-shaped wide bowl + watch the issue vanish.

๐Ÿฝ๏ธ

Separate food + water spots

Place water bowls AWAY from food bowls (across the room minimum). Wild cats don't drink from where they eat โ€” instinct says "dead prey contaminates water". Many cats with apparent water aversion just have water next to food.

โŒ

Skip plastic

Plastic = bacteria + leached chemicals + chin acne. Stainless or ceramic only. Replace ceramic if glazed surface cracks (bacteria colonise crack lines). Cheap stainless + cat-allergic? Check for nickel โ€” switch to 304-grade or ceramic.

๐Ÿงผ

Daily wash, weekly deep-clean

Wet food bowls: wash after every meal โ€” bacteria multiply fast in protein residue. Dry food bowls: rinse daily, full wash 2โ€“3ร— weekly. Water fountain: filter every 2โ€“4 weeks per manufacturer, full strip + scrub weekly. Algae + biofilm grow on pump intakes.

๐Ÿฉบ

Sudden water-intake change = vet

Cat suddenly drinking lots more (PU/PD): kidney disease, diabetes, hyperthyroidism โ€” three of the top four senior-cat diseases. Cat suddenly drinking less + lethargy: dehydration, urinary blockage (male cats โ€” life-threatening within 24h). Either way, vet within 24h.

Frequently asked questions

Is a water fountain really worth the money?

Yes for most indoor cats. Studies and vet experience show 2โ€“3ร— higher daily water intake on a fountain vs still bowl. Higher intake = lower urine concentration = lower risk of crystals, blockages and CKD progression. โ‚ฌ30โ€“โ‚ฌ50 spent on a fountain pays for itself in avoided urinary vet visits.

My cat eats from the middle of the bowl but leaves the edges โ€” why?

Whisker fatigue. The whiskers brushing the sides cause sensory overload. Switch to a wide-shallow bowl (saucer style, 18 cm+ diameter, less than 3 cm deep). Most owners see immediate improvement.

Wet food, dry food, or both?

Both is the best balance: wet food carries the hydration (75% water), dry is calorically dense + helps slightly with dental abrasion. Avoid free-feeding dry alone โ€” links to obesity, diabetes, urinary issues. Two scheduled meals/day + a water fountain is the modern best practice.

How much water should a cat drink?

50โ€“60 ml per kg body weight per day, including food moisture. A 4 kg cat needs ~200โ€“240 ml total. On wet food, much of that comes from the food. On dry only, the cat must drink it all โ€” and most don't, hence chronic mild dehydration + urinary issues.
