American Bulldog vs English Bulldog

Side-by-side comparison of two popular breeds — temperament, exercise, grooming, lifespan and common health issues. Use it to decide which breed fits your home.

American Bulldog vs English Bulldog — at a glance

The American Bulldog (27–55 kg, 10–12 years) and the English Bulldog (18–25 kg, 8–10 years) sit in different — or sometimes overlapping — corners of dog ownership. Here's how they really compare for an everyday Irish or UK family.

American Bulldog is the significantly higher-energy dog of the two. If you can't commit to 60+ minutes of active exercise daily plus mental stimulation, the English Bulldog is the lower-friction choice.

Both have manageable grooming routines — the English Bulldog demands slightly more, but neither needs daily fuss.

For a first-time owner, the English Bulldog is much more forgiving than the American Bulldog.

Insurance premiums for breeds with brachycephalic, joint or cancer predispositions run 20–40% above average — check before you commit. We have a free quote calculator here.

American Bulldog

Temperament

Exercise

60+ minutes daily of vigorous exercise. Strong, athletic, capable of weight-pulling + agility.

Grooming

Short coat — weekly brush. Light shedding year-round.

Health

Generally healthier than English Bulldog. Watch for: hip + elbow dysplasia, neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (NCL, DNA test), ichthyosis, allergies.

English Bulldog

Temperament

Calm, dignified, friendly, sometimes stubborn. Bulldogs are fantastic with children, tolerant of other pets, and famously unmotivated to chase or wander. Their stubbornness shows in training — short, motivating sessions work best.

Exercise

20–40 minutes of gentle walking daily, ideally in cool conditions. Avoid heat (anything above 22°C is risky), avoid stairs, never let them swim. Mental enrichment is more useful than physical exhaustion.

Grooming

Smooth coat needs weekly brushing only. The big jobs are the wrinkles — clean facial folds, the tail pocket and any deep skin creases weekly with a damp cloth, then dry. Skin and ear infections are common.

Health

BOAS (brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome). Hip dysplasia. Skin fold dermatitis. Cherry eye. Heat stroke. Almost all puppies are born by C-section. Lifespan is sadly short for a non-giant breed (8–10 years). Pet insurance is essential and expensive.
