American Bulldog
A powerful, athletic working bulldog — much larger and more agile than the English Bulldog, with fewer health issues.
Saved from extinction by John D. Johnson and Alan Scott in the mid-20th century. American Bulldogs are working farm dogs — they hunt boar, guard property, and form strong family bonds. Two main lines: Johnson (heavier, more bulldog-like) and Scott (lighter, more athletic).
Temperament
Confident, courageous, devoted. Protective of family without being aggressive when properly socialised. Excellent with children when raised together.
Exercise needs
60+ minutes daily of vigorous exercise. Strong, athletic, capable of weight-pulling + agility.
Grooming
Short coat — weekly brush. Light shedding year-round.
Common health issues
Generally healthier than English Bulldog. Watch for: hip + elbow dysplasia, neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (NCL, DNA test), ichthyosis, allergies.
👍 Best for
Active families with garden, owners experienced with large working breeds.
👎 Not best for
First-time owners, apartments, owners who can't commit to socialisation + training.
