Jack Russell Terrier vs Scottish Terrier

Side-by-side comparison of two popular breeds — temperament, exercise, grooming, lifespan and common health issues. Use it to decide which breed fits your home.

Jack Russell Terrier vs Scottish Terrier — at a glance

The Jack Russell Terrier (6–9 kg, 13–16 years) and the Scottish Terrier (8–10 kg, 11–13 years) sit in different — or sometimes overlapping — corners of dog ownership. Here's how they really compare for an everyday Irish or UK family.

Jack Russell Terrier is the significantly higher-energy dog of the two. If you can't commit to 60+ minutes of active exercise daily plus mental stimulation, the Scottish Terrier is the lower-friction choice.

Grooming is where these breeds really diverge: the Scottish Terrier needs significantly more brushing, washing and coat care. Factor in €30–€80 every 6–8 weeks for a professional groomer if you don't do it yourself.

For allergy sufferers, the Scottish Terrier is the lower-shed, more hypoallergenic option.

Insurance premiums for breeds with brachycephalic, joint or cancer predispositions run 20–40% above average — check before you commit. We have a free quote calculator here.

Jack Russell Terrier Jack Russell Terrier

Temperament

Bold, energetic, alert, independent. Jack Russells are famously feisty — they don't back down from larger dogs and are determined hunters of small animals. Loyal but not endlessly cuddly.

Exercise

60–90 minutes of vigorous daily activity. They thrive on agility, terrier racing (terrier-go), flyball and hide-and-seek games. Without enough exercise they dig, bark, escape.

Grooming

Three coat types: smooth (weekly brush), broken (twice a week + occasional hand-strip), and rough (weekly + regular hand-stripping). All are low-maintenance compared to long-coated breeds.

Health

Generally extremely healthy and long-lived (often 15+). Watch for: patellar luxation, lens luxation, deafness in some white-headed lines, Legg-Calvé-Perthes (small breeds).
