The Scottish Terrier was bred in the Scottish Highlands to hunt rats and foxes from rocky dens. Today's Scottie is dignified, independent and famously stubborn — a small dog with the temperament of a much larger guardian.

Independent, dignified, alert, determined. Scotties bond closely with family but are aloof with strangers and can be reactive with other dogs.

Exercise needs

45 minutes of daily walking plus mental work.

Grooming

Wire double coat. Hand-strip or clip every 8 weeks.

Common health issues

Scottie cramp. Bladder cancer (over-represented). Von Willebrand's. Craniomandibular osteopathy.
