Bouvier des Flandres
A massive Flemish cattle drover — versatile working dog, devoted family guardian.
Developed in 17th-century Flanders as an all-purpose farm dog — cattle drover, draft animal, guard dog. WWI nearly drove the breed to extinction; revived by Belgian breeders. Famously the breed Ronald Reagan kept at the White House.
Temperament
Calm, dignified, devoted. Excellent with children, protective of family without aggression. Confident and trainable.
Exercise needs
60–90 minutes daily.
Grooming
Thick wire double coat needs brushing 2–3× weekly + professional grooming every 6–8 weeks.
Common health issues
Watch for: hip + elbow dysplasia, bloat (GDV), glaucoma, hypothyroidism, juvenile laryngeal paralysis (DNA test).

Experienced active families with kids, owners committed to grooming, those wanting a working dog.
👎 Not best for
Apartment dwellers, first-time owners, time-poor groomers.
