Manchester Terrier
An elegant, smooth-coated terrier from Manchester — once the most popular dog in Victorian England.
Combination of Whippet (sighthound speed) and Black-and-Tan Terrier (ratting drive). Once the dominant English terrier, now rare. Two sizes: Standard (5–10 kg) and Toy (under 5 kg).
Temperament
Alert, confident, devoted to family. Cleaner + quieter than most terriers. Still has terrier prey drive — cats are a problem.
Exercise needs
45–60 minutes daily.
Grooming
Short smooth coat — weekly wipe-down. Minimal shedding.
Common health issues
Generally hardy + long-lived. Watch for: cardiac issues, von Willebrand disease (bleeding disorder, DNA test), Legg-Calvé-Perthes.
👍 Best for
Active owners wanting a low-grooming alert dog.
👎 Not best for
Multi-cat homes, sedentary households.
