Developed in 19th-century Germany by crossing Standard Schnauzers with Affenpinschers and Poodles, the Miniature Schnauzer was bred to ratter on farms. Today's Mini Schnauzer is one of the most popular small breeds β€” spirited, alert, hypoallergenic and equally good with families and singles.

Temperament

Alert, friendly, obedient, fearless. Mini Schnauzers can be barky (they're excellent watchdogs) and have higher prey drive than most toys.

Exercise needs

45–60 minutes of daily exercise plus play. They're terriers β€” they need a job.

Grooming

Wiry double coat. Hand-stripping every 8–12 weeks for show coat; most pet owners clip every 6 weeks. Brush 2–3Γ— weekly. Beard needs daily wiping.

Common health issues

Pancreatitis (high risk β€” keep diet low fat). Bladder stones. Hyperlipidaemia. Cataracts. Cushing's disease.

πŸ‘ Best for

Families with older children, allergy-sensitive owners, owners who like daily walks.

πŸ‘Ž Not best for

Households with cats, rabbits or small pets β€” prey drive is real.
