The Norwegian Forest Cat ("skogkatt") features in Norse mythology โ€” Freya's chariot was supposedly drawn by these cats. They're a natural breed shaped by Norway's harsh winters: dense double coats, water-resistant outer guard hairs, tufted ears and substantial bones.

Temperament

Friendly, calm, independent. "Wegies" enjoy company but don't demand constant attention. Excellent climbers โ€” provide tall cat trees.

Exercise needs

Moderate. Big climbers; need vertical space.

Grooming

Long double coat, surprisingly low-mat. Brush 2โ€“3ร— weekly, daily during seasonal moults.

Common health issues

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Glycogen storage disease type IV (DNA test). Hip dysplasia. Generally robust.

๐Ÿ‘ Best for

Families with children, multi-pet homes, owners with houses (vertical space matters).

๐Ÿ‘Ž Not best for

Owners who don't want any shedding.
