The Papillon (French for "butterfly", referring to the wing-like ears) is a 700-year-old European toy breed depicted in Renaissance paintings. Despite the dainty appearance, Papillons are athletic, agile and consistently rated one of the most intelligent toy breeds β a top performer in agility competitions.
Temperament
Friendly, alert, lively, smart. Papillons are surprisingly bold and athletic for their size and excellent at training games.
Exercise needs
30β45 minutes a day plus mental work.
Grooming
Long silky single coat β light shedding. Brush 2β3Γ weekly. Ear feathering needs care.
Common health issues
Patellar luxation. Progressive retinal atrophy (DNA test). Dental disease. Open fontanel (puppies). Generally healthy and long-lived.
