Scottish Deerhound vs Whippet

Side-by-side comparison of two popular breeds — temperament, exercise, grooming, lifespan and common health issues. Use it to decide which breed fits your home.

Scottish Deerhound vs Whippet — at a glance

The Scottish Deerhound (34–50 kg, 8–11 years) and the Whippet (8–18 kg, 12–15 years) sit in different — or sometimes overlapping — corners of dog ownership. Here's how they really compare for an everyday Irish or UK family.

Both breeds have similar energy demands — Whippet tips slightly higher but neither is a couch dog.

Grooming is where these breeds really diverge: the Scottish Deerhound needs significantly more brushing, washing and coat care. Factor in €30–€80 every 6–8 weeks for a professional groomer if you don't do it yourself.

For a first-time owner, the Whippet is much more forgiving than the Scottish Deerhound.

Insurance premiums for breeds with brachycephalic, joint or cancer predispositions run 20–40% above average — check before you commit. We have a free quote calculator here.

Scottish Deerhound

Temperament

Calm, dignified, devoted to family. Reserved with strangers without being aggressive. Loves to lie around indoors and explode into sprints outside.

Exercise

45–60 minutes daily including a chance to run. Adult dogs are sprinters not endurance athletes. Avoid impact for puppies under 18 months.

Grooming

Rough harsh coat — brush 1–2× weekly. Strip every 6–8 months. Light shedder year-round.

Health

Watch for: dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM — get cardiac screening), osteosarcoma, bloat (GDV — deep-chested), factor VII deficiency (bleeding disorder, DNA test).

Whippet

Temperament

Gentle, sweet, sensitive, quiet. Whippets are velcro-dogs with their family, calm with strangers and tolerant of children. High prey drive towards small animals.

Exercise

60 minutes of daily exercise — two short walks plus a sprint.

Grooming

Short fine coat, weekly brush. They feel cold — most need a coat in winter.

Health

Generally a healthy breed. Watch for: hereditary deafness, eye conditions, anaesthesia sensitivity, dental disease. Lifespan often 14+.
