Scottish Deerhound
A gentle, elegant giant sighthound — Sir Walter Scott called them "the most perfect creature of Heaven."
Bred to course Scottish red deer, the Deerhound is the sighthound version of the Wolfhound — slightly smaller but with the same dignified gentleness. Coat is rough and harsh, ideal for Scottish weather.
Temperament
Calm, dignified, devoted to family. Reserved with strangers without being aggressive. Loves to lie around indoors and explode into sprints outside.

Watch for: dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM — get cardiac screening), osteosarcoma, bloat (GDV — deep-chested), factor VII deficiency (bleeding disorder, DNA test).
👍 Best for
Quiet rural homes with space, owners willing to handle short lifespan.
👎 Not best for
Apartments, urban environments with cats running around (massive prey drive).
