Tibetan Mastiff vs Tibetan Terrier

Side-by-side comparison of two popular breeds — temperament, exercise, grooming, lifespan and common health issues. Use it to decide which breed fits your home.

Tibetan Mastiff vs Tibetan Terrier — at a glance

The Tibetan Mastiff (45–73 kg, 10–14 years) and the Tibetan Terrier (8–14 kg, 12–15 years) sit in different — or sometimes overlapping — corners of dog ownership. Here's how they really compare for an everyday Irish or UK family.

Energy levels are well-matched between the Tibetan Mastiff and Tibetan Terrier — both need similar daily exercise.

On trainability, the Tibetan Terrier is markedly easier to train — picks up cues fast, stays focused. The Tibetan Mastiff is more independent and rewards patience over volume.

If you have young children, the Tibetan Terrier is the clearly more child-friendly choice.

For a first-time owner, the Tibetan Terrier is much more forgiving than the Tibetan Mastiff.

For allergy sufferers, the Tibetan Terrier is the lower-shed, more hypoallergenic option.

Insurance premiums for breeds with brachycephalic, joint or cancer predispositions run 20–40% above average — check before you commit. We have a free quote calculator here.
